Cognitive shuffling: the viral sleep trick and its one study

Cognitive shuffling is the sleep technique of 2026. It has had a run through the Washington Post, TIME, and public radio, earned itself a slot in every sleepmaxxing roundup, and nearly every write-up describes it as science-backed. It is a good technique. That description is doing a lot of work it hasn’t earned.

What it is

The method, developed by cognitive scientist Luc Beaudoin, is officially called serial diverse imagining. The idea is to give your mind a stream of unrelated, emotionally neutral images to picture, one after another, with nothing connecting them.

The common version works like this. Pick a random word, say piano. Take the first letter, P, and think of words starting with it: pear, puddle, penguin, piano key. Picture each one for a couple of seconds, then move on. Exhaust P, move to I, then A. If you’re still awake when the word runs out, pick another.

The point is the disconnection. Coherent thought is what keeps you awake: planning, replaying, worrying. A sequence of images that refuses to add up to anything is very hard to build anxiety out of.

The evidence problem

Here is what sits behind the “science-backed” claim.

Beaudoin and colleagues tested the technique on 154 university students who reported excessive pre-sleep mental arousal. Pre-sleep arousal, sleep effort, and sleep quality all improved from baseline, and serial diverse imagining performed about as well as structured problem-solving, an established technique.

Three things about that study. It was presented as a conference poster at SLEEP 2016 and, as far as we can find, was never published as a peer-reviewed paper; it lives in a university repository. Students were assigned to the imagining task, to structured problem-solving, or to both, and every arm improved from baseline with no untreated comparison group, so the technique can’t be separated from the effect of doing something deliberate at bedtime for a few weeks. And Beaudoin developed and sells the app built around the method.

None of that makes it wrong. Plenty of good ideas start as a poster. But a decade later it remains the whole evidence base, and “science-backed” is not what one unreplicated, unpublished study with a commercial interest attached amounts to.

The cousin that does have trials

Now the better news, and the reason we would still suggest trying it.

A closely related technique called cognitive refocusing therapy, developed by Les Gellis, is built on the same premise: replace the content of your pre-sleep thinking with something absorbing but emotionally flat. It has published randomized trials.

In one, 51 university students received either cognitive refocusing plus sleep hygiene education or sleep hygiene alone. The refocusing group improved more on insomnia severity, with a trend toward reduced cognitive arousal (Gellis 2013).

A later feasibility trial randomized 40 college students to a single session of cognitive refocusing (12), stimulus control (14), or an awareness control (14), alongside a separately recruited no-treatment group. Every arm improved. The within-group effect sizes on insomnia severity were 1.66 for stimulus control, 1.13 for refocusing, and 0.90 for the awareness control, which the authors report descriptively rather than as a head-to-head test (Goodhines 2024).

Underneath both sits the foundational result. Forty-one people with insomnia were told at bedtime to distract themselves with vivid imagery, to distract themselves generally, or to do nothing. The imagery group fell asleep faster and had less frequent, less distressing pre-sleep thinking. Generic distraction did nothing. It had to be imagery (Harvey 2002).

So the mechanism has trial evidence behind it. The specific branded protocol is what remains untested.

How to do it

  • Pick a neutral word. Piano, garden, lantern. Avoid anything attached to your life. No colleagues’ names, no mortgage.
  • Two or three seconds per image, then move on. Lingering lets a story form, and a story is a thread your worry can climb.
  • Keep it concrete. Picture the pear rather than thinking about the word. Sensory detail is what occupies the space.
  • Don’t grade yourself. Losing track isn’t failure. It’s usually the last thing you remember before sleep.
  • If you’re still awake and annoyed after 20 minutes, get up and do something dull in dim light. That’s stimulus control, which came out at least as well as refocusing in the pilot above anyway.

The same idea as a sleep story

A shuffle asks you to build a stream of disconnected images while tired. A sleep story hands you one already built, narrated by someone whose job is to keep it wandering and free of stakes.
