The King of the Golden River is John Ruskin's Victorian fairy tale about two cruel brothers, one kind one, and a mountain stream that turns to gold.

Schwartz and Hans are the "Black Brothers," greedy farmers who own a lush valley called Treasure Valley. They work their little brother Gluck hard and turn away every traveler who knocks — until a strange old man called South-West Wind, Esquire, comes in from a storm one night. Gluck alone treats him kindly. His brothers throw the stranger back out into the rain, and the valley pays for it: the wind that follows strips the fields bare and leaves the family with nothing but an old golden mug.

Alone and hungry, Gluck melts the mug down to help a starving man, and watches it turn into a tiny, golden king. The king tells him a secret: whoever climbs to the river's source and pours in three drops of holy water will turn the water to gold. But drops poured by an unkind hand turn to black stone — and so does the person who pours them. Schwartz and Hans each set off up the mountain, treating everyone they pass on the way with the same greed they've always shown, and each one turns to stone before he reaches the top. Gluck follows after them, giving his water away to a dying dog, a thirsty child, and a tired old woman before he ever gets near the source — and it's that kindness, not the climb, that finally turns the river gold and brings Treasure Valley back to life.

It's a gentle Victorian fable, part coming-of-age tale and part mountain fairy story, in the same vein as the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. It's a good pick for listeners who love old-fashioned stories where kindness is rewarded and greed gets what it deserves.

It's a short, quiet story, easy to follow half asleep. The soft, slow narration is a calm way to watch a barren valley turn green again as you fade out before the gold ever reaches the sea.
