The Little Mermaid, Hans Christian Andersen's aching fairy tale of longing and sacrifice, gets a slow, gentle telling made for drifting off to sleep.

This is the original story, not the version with a happy ending. A young mermaid princess lives with her father and five sisters in a coral palace far under the sea. She's curious about the world above the waves, and on the night she's finally old enough to swim to the surface, she saves a drowning prince from a shipwreck and falls in love with him from afar. Wanting more than her life beneath the water can give her, she visits a sea witch and strikes a painful bargain: a human body in exchange for her voice, with every step on land feeling like walking on knives.

On land, unable to speak, she must find a way to win the prince's heart without telling him who she is or what she gave up for him. Her sisters, watching from the sea, aren't ready to let her go so easily. What follows is a quiet, sorrowful tale about wanting a life beyond the one you were born into, and what it costs to reach for it.

This is Andersen at his most melancholy — closer to gothic fairy tale than children's cartoon, with themes of longing, identity, and quiet self-sacrifice running under the water imagery. It's a good fit for listeners who love old Danish folklore, bittersweet classics, or fairy tales with real weight to them, not just the sanitized retellings.

Less an adventure than a lullaby with an undertow, this one lets the sea imagery and slow sadness settle over you rather than rush past. Elizabeth Grace's soft telling is easy to sink into, easy to fall asleep inside of.
