20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea follows a scientist swept aboard a mysterious submarine and into the strangest corners of the ocean.

Professor Pierre Aronnax, his devoted servant Conseil, and a hot-tempered harpooner named Ned Land set out to hunt down a sea monster that has been ramming ships across the globe. When their own vessel is wrecked in the chase, the three men are hauled aboard the "monster" itself: a submarine called the Nautilus, commanded by the brooding, brilliant Captain Nemo.

Nemo has cut every tie to land and lives entirely beneath the waves. For reasons he won't fully explain, he keeps his three guests as permanent passengers rather than setting them free. Aronnax is dazzled by what he sees along the way: coral forests, sunken wrecks, the ruins of Atlantis, a tense standoff with a giant squid, and a crossing beneath the polar ice. But under the wonder runs a quieter question that Aronnax can't shake: who is Nemo, really, and what is he doing down there.

This is early science fiction crossed with seafaring adventure, a voyage story grounded in real marine science and Verne's own restless imagination. It's a good fit for listeners who enjoy Verne's other journeys, classic nineteenth-century exploration tales, or slow-burn stories built around a brilliant, secretive man with something to hide.

Andrew Bond keeps his voice low and even, more current than plot, so the hum of the Nautilus and the strange quiet of the deep can pull you under before Nemo's voyage is halfway done.
