Does background sound help you focus? It depends on you

Every productivity article promises the perfect focus soundtrack. The research is less accommodating: background sound helps some people concentrate and measurably hurts others. Which group you’re in matters more than what you play. The same split shows up at night, which is the subject of how to sleep with noise you can’t turn off.

The finding that explains the arguments

A 2024 meta-analysis of 13 studies found that white and pink noise gave a small but reliable benefit to young people with ADHD or elevated attention problems — and a small but reliable decrease in performance for those without (Nigg 2024). Same sound, opposite results.

You can see it in ordinary classrooms too. In a study of 51 schoolchildren, background white noise improved recall for the children teachers rated as inattentive, and worsened it for the most attentive ones, effectively erasing the gap between them (Söderlund 2010). The leading explanation is arousal: an attention system idling below its best gets a lift from a bit of noise, while one already at speed has nowhere to go but down.

The split isn’t a law, though. In a smaller lab study, 22 adults took the same test battery four times, once in quiet and once under each of red, pink and white noise, and every color beat quiet on several of those measures (Lu 2020). Twenty-two people running short lab tasks is much weaker evidence than 13 pooled studies, so we’d still bet on the pattern above. But “steady noise hurts people who focus fine already” is a tendency, not a rule, and results like this are why the question keeps getting re-litigated.

That’s why the office debate never resolves. Both sides are right about themselves.

Lyrics are the reliable villain

If there’s one near-universal finding, it’s this: words are the problem. A Bayesian meta-analysis of 65 reading studies found background speech the most disruptive sound type, lyrical music reliably worse than instrumental, and plain background noise the weakest and least reliable disruptor of the three (Vasilev 2018).

Researchers call this the irrelevant sound effect. Sound that constantly changes state — speech, lyrics, a shifting melody — intrudes on the mental rehearsal that verbal work depends on. Steady, unchanging sound largely doesn’t. Which is exactly why a fan or steady rain can fade into nothing while a podcast in the next room is unbearable.

One humbling footnote from that research: people correctly noticed lyrics were hurting them, but also believed instrumental music was helping when the data showed no measurable difference (Souza 2023). Our sense of what music does for us is only partly accurate.

What about music in general?

Broadly, a wash. A meta-analysis of 97 studies found a near-zero average effect on adults, which masked opposite effects underneath: music slightly hurt reading and memory while improving mood and sports performance (Kämpfe 2011). Music is great for how work feels. It’s not a performance enhancer.

And volume matters as much as content. In one study of neurotypical adults, quiet white noise around 45 dB improved sustained attention and creativity, while 65 dB slowed typing and raised physiological stress (Awada 2022). Louder is not better.

(A widely shared study did find that engineered personalized soundscapes beat silence for focus, but the effect held only for participants under 36, one in six people still focused best in silence, and the study was funded by both the company that made the audio and the company that measured it, and written by employees of the latter. We mention it for completeness, not as proof.)

The practical version
