Beowulf

Beowulf is one of the oldest stories in the English language, a thousand-year-old tale of monsters, kings, and a hero who refuses to run.

The poem opens in Denmark, where King Hrothgar's great mead hall, Heorot, has become a place of dread. Night after night, a monster named Grendel creeps out of the marshes and kills Hrothgar's men as they sleep. Word of the slaughter reaches Beowulf, a young warrior from the land of the Geats, and he sails across the sea with a small band of men to end it. He meets Grendel bare-handed, in the dark, with nothing but his own strength.

Killing Grendel does not end the trouble. The monster's mother, grieving and furious, comes to Heorot seeking revenge, and Beowulf must follow her down into a lake to fight her in her own lair. Years pass. Beowulf becomes king of the Geats himself, ruling in peace until, in his old age, a dragon woken by a stolen cup begins burning his land. One last time, the hero takes up his sword.

This is Anglo-Saxon epic poetry at its root — a heroic adventure built on monster-slaying, sea voyages, loyalty between warriors, and the slow shadow of mortality that hangs over even the strongest man.
