A Christmas Carol

Narrated by Elizabeth Grace or Andrew Bond

Ebenezer Scrooge gets the fright of his life in A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens's ghost story about a cold old miser given one last chance to change, read slowly and softly for sleep.

Scrooge hates Christmas. He turns away his cheerful nephew, snaps at carolers, and grudges his clerk, Bob Cratchit, even one day off by the fire. Then, on Christmas Eve, the ghost of his old business partner Jacob Marley appears, bound in heavy chains forged by a lifetime of greed. Marley warns Scrooge that three more spirits are coming, and that there is still time to escape his own chains, if Scrooge will only listen.

Through the night, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come lead Scrooge through his own life. He sees the boy he once was and the warmth he shut away. He watches the Cratchits share a small, happy dinner despite having so little, with gentle, sickly Tiny Tim at the table. And he glimpses a bleak future where his death means nothing to anyone at all. By morning, shaken and wide awake, Scrooge begins to understand what his choices have cost him, and what he might still set right.

This is a gothic ghost story wrapped around a quiet tale of redemption, full of foggy London streets, rattling chains, and old regrets. It's a holiday classic, but its questions about kindness, memory, and how we spend our short time are just as good any month of the year. It's perfect for fans of Dickens, of classic ghost stories, or anyone who likes a story that turns from cold to warm by the end.

The pace stays gentle and low, closer to a fireside than a haunting. Scrooge's cold heart thaws so slowly that you can let the whole night settle over you and be gone before the last spirit takes its leave.
